Swimmers in Great North Swim in Lake Windermere

Great North Swim 2019

Beat the crowds and the busy roads - travel by boat to the start/finish line.

We are pleased to be involved with the John West Great North Swim again this year, by providing transport solutions for swimmers and their supporters.

Park in a quieter area around Lake Windermere (Bowness or Ambleside) and use our convenient boat service to get the start/finish line at Brockhole. Bowness has over 450 pay-and-display car parking spaces within a 7-minute walk from our pier, Ambleside has 280 pay-and-display car parking spaces within a 10-minute walk from our pier. We are also running a regular boat service from Wray Castle to Brockhole.

This year the event village is at Brockhole - Lake District Visitor Centre. See map

Each swimmer/competitor should have received a discount voucher which will entitle them to discount travel between Bowness, Ambleside or Wray Castle/Campsite to Brockhole (Great North Swim start/finish) on Friday 7, Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June.

Cost

  • A swimmer/competitor's return journey costs £4.
  • In addition, up to 4 people can travel with the swimmer at the reduced rate of £6 (adults) or £4 (Child 5-15).

Not swimming or taking part?

More than 30,000 people will be either swimming or cheering on the competitors during the weekend of Friday 7 - Sunday 9 June. Although the event is well planned and additional transport/parking is available, the area around Brockhole - Lake District Visitor Centre including Bowness and Ambleside is likely to get extremely busy.

We are advising customers who are visiting us over the weekend who aren't taking part in the swim to consider a day out at areas of the lake unaffected by the large amounts of people. Generally the southern half of Windermere will be much quieter, so why not try the following on the Great North Swim weekend?
