A great day out for literary buffs or anyone interested in the life of one of England’s greatest poets. This package explores the scenery and natural beauty that inspired the writing of William Wordsworth (1770 – 1850).
Start your journey along the beautiful Leven Valley via steam train to Lakeside Pier, simply cross the platform from the train to reach our pier. Travelling north on the lake by ‘steamer’ or modern launch, you’ll take in the views of the Lakeland fells that Wordsworth would have known so well. He wrote of the mountains: "in the combinations which they make, towering above each other, or lifting themselves in ridges like the waves of a tumultuous sea, and in the beauty and variety of their surfaces and colours, they are surpassed by none".
Wordsworth’s ‘Guide through the District of the Lakes’, written in 1820 reflected his passion for the area and arguably prompted the Lake District tourism boom, ironically despised by Wordsworth in later life.
After your cruise, travel north to Rydal Mount, a distance of 2.5 miles and explore the poet’s former home and gardens. The home and original features give a fascinating insight into a Lakeland home and how this writer lived and worked there. As well as the impressive house, the stunning landscaped gardens designed by Wordsworth himself are well worth a visit. In addition to the house and gardens, Rydal Mount has a gift shop, and tea room serving a delicious selection of local and freshly prepared food.
- Transport from Bowness Pier to Rydal Mount is not included in this ticket. Please make your own way there via your coach or public transport is available. ( Number 599 bus – journey takes 40 minutes)
