Mum’s the Word!

Ahead of Mother’s Day (Sunday 15 March), the search is on to find one deserving mum who will have her name immortalised on a new boat taking to the waters of Windermere this Spring.

Windermere Lake Cruises will be unveiling six new eco-friendly motorboats at Easter, which will be available to hire from Waterhead (Ambleside). The electric vessels carry up to six people and will all be christened with girls’ names, in line with a long-standing maritime tradition.

Although five of the boats have already been named by members of staff, the company is now giving one family the chance to give their mum a unique Mother’s Day gift and see the sixth new boat named after her.

People are being asked to nominate their mothers via the Windermere Lake Cruises website, describing why their mum deserves to have her name immortalised on the boat. Whatever the reason, it can be funny, heart-warming or something just personal to them. A small panel of judges from the company will then decide the ultimate winner.

As a thank you, the winning family will steer the newly-christened boat on its maiden voyage around England’s largest natural lake. The winner will also receive a ‘Family Freedom of the Lake’ pass available to use on any scheduled Windermere Lake Cruises service, aboard a ‘steamer’ or traditional launch.

Entries must be received before 5pm on Friday 27 February and the winner will be announced on Monday 2 March. www.windermere-lakecruises.co.uk/mum

As an electric vessel, the designated motorboat has zero carbon emissions and is much quieter that petrol-fuelled counterparts, making it ideal for exploring the tranquil western shore of Windermere and its many hidden islands and bays
