Ambleside pier

The best dog walks in Ambleside

Arriving by boat at Waterhead pier puts you right at the heart of some of the best dog-friendly walks in the Lake District. Ambleside is a long-time favourite with dog owners, and for good reason. From gentle lakeside paths to rewarding fell walks, there are plenty of routes close to the pier that are ideal for stretching legs, enjoying fresh air and taking in classic Windermere scenery.

As locals know, these walks work particularly well in quieter months, when paths are calmer and the landscape feels more peaceful. Here are five reliable dog-friendly walks near Ambleside, all starting from Waterhead or easily reached on foot from the pier.

Rydal Hall and the Grot

Distance: 1.5 to 3 miles, depending on route
Difficulty: easy

This gentle walk from Ambleside heads towards Rydal Hall, following well-used paths that suit a relaxed dog walk. Woodland sections and open views make it a calm and scenic option, particularly outside the busier seasons.

A highlight of the route is the Grot, built in 1668 by Sir Daniel Fleming as a viewing point for Rydal Falls. Designed to frame the waterfall, it is one of the earliest purpose-built viewing stations in Britain and a lovely place to pause along the way.

The paths are mostly level and well maintained, making this a reliable choice for an easy outing that pairs nicely with a visit to Rydal Hall or a nearby café.

Loughrigg Fell and Rydal Caves

Distance: approx. 4 to 5 miles
Difficulty: moderate

Often described by locals as one of the best value-for-effort walks in the Lake District, Loughrigg Fell offers big views without the commitment of a high fell. The route rewards walkers with panoramic scenery across Grasmere, Rydal Water, Langdale and Windermere.

Many routes include a visit to Rydal Caves, a dog-friendly and atmospheric landmark above Rydal Water. There are some climbs and uneven ground, but it remains an achievable and very rewarding walk for energetic dogs and confident walkers.

Ambleside to Grasmere via the Coffin Route

Distance: approx. 5 miles one way
Difficulty: moderate

The historic Coffin Route is one of the best low-level dog-friendly walks in the central Lake District. Once used to carry coffins between Ambleside and Grasmere, it now offers a well-loved path with views over Rydal Water, woodland stretches and glimpses of Rydal Hall.

It is ideal for dogs who enjoy longer walks without steep climbs. Many walkers choose to return by a different route or transport, making it a flexible and popular option.

Rothay Park and St Mary’s Church

Distance: approx. 2 miles return
Difficulty: easy

This easy walk from Waterhead leads into the centre of Ambleside, finishing at Rothay Park, a popular riverside green space with open lawns and plenty of room for a relaxed dog walk. Set beside the River Rothay, it is a lovely spot to slow down and enjoy the quieter side of town.

Close by is St Mary’s Church, one of Ambleside’s most recognisable landmarks, with its tall spire visible from across the valley. It is worth a brief stop as you pass through, adding a touch of local history to an otherwise gentle and straightforward walk.

The mostly level route makes this a reliable option year round, especially in winter when higher paths can be muddy or icy, and it keeps you close to cafés and shops for a warm drink afterwards.
