Working together to create opportunities across Cumbria

We are proud to be working in partnership with PHX Training as we continue to create better opportunities for both our existing staff and new recruits across Windermere Lake Cruises—one of the UK’s most popular paid-for attractions.

Through PHX’s Skills Bootcamp, which supports people who have been unemployed long term or are struggling to re-enter the workplace, we have recently welcomed two new fixed-term team members to our crew.

Anyone aged 19 or over can join these fully funded bootcamps, which offer flexible, in-person or online training that fits around participants’ schedules. After six weeks, learners gain a recognised qualification and with us, everyone who completes the programme is guaranteed an interview.

Our Head of HR, Debbie Hooper, explains: “For those who’ve been out of work for some time, returning to employment can feel daunting. By guaranteeing interviews, we’re offering opportunities to people who might otherwise be overlooked.”

Alongside supporting new entrants into work, we’re also committed to developing our existing teams. Working with PHX, we’re helping our staff take funded Level 3 hospitality business management training to enhance their skills and support their career progression.

Debbie adds: “We want every member of our team—seasonal or permanent—to have the chance to grow. These courses give people the tools to progress, gain confidence and strengthen the skills they use every day.”

PHX Training’s Sharon Hill said: “We recently delivered a Skills Bootcamp in Hospitality to a wonderful group of learners from diverse backgrounds. Their commitment was outstanding, and it has been a privilege to partner with Windermere Lake Cruises. Debbie and Sapphy provided incredible support, interviewing learners and helping us deliver the Level 3 Hospitality Team Leading course to current staff. Their commitment to developing their people is clear.”

One of our team members who has completed the in-house training is Alisha Bath from our Pier Café. Alisha shared: “I wanted to improve myself, so I took the chance to join the course. As a supervisor, it’s helped me strengthen the skills I use every day. I now feel much more confident handling high-pressure situations, customer challenges, and stock management. The qualification has supported me not only at work but in my life outside of it.”

Two participants from the PHX Skills Bootcamp, Stef and Luke, also recently joined our seasonal team after completing the programme.

Stef said: “The Skills Bootcamp reignited my enjoyment of learning. The support from PHX helped me find a role that suits my preference for working outdoors. I’m excited to use the new skills I gained as I start my job with Windermere Lake Cruises.”

This partnership is just one of several initiatives we are trialling to support people into meaningful employment in Cumbria. We are also working alongside Westmorland & Furness Council to create even more opportunities for local workers.
