The Queen and The Princess Royal sail on board historic Windermere steamer

One of Windermere’s historic steamers has today, Wednesday 17 July, welcomed two very special visitors; Her Majesty The Queen and Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. MV Teal, the largest steamer ever built for the lake, hosted the two Royal guests on a cruise from Bowness-on-Windermere up the lake to Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre. It is the second time The Queen has travelled on board the Teal, having previously sailed from Ambleside to Bowness with The Duke of Edinburgh back in August 1956.

South Cumbrian businesses come together to provide free summer travel for all

A free bus service linking up a range of visitor destinations across South Lakes is back bigger and better than ever before, thanks to support from the GoLakes Travel programme and a unique collaboration of local businesses. The South Lakes FreeRider has proved popular with visitors and residents over the past two years, and this summer will see the route extended to Grange-over-Sands and Grizedale Forest. That means passengers not only have easier access to the coastal village of Grange and the Cartmel Peninsula, but a range of activities at Grizedale Visitor Centre including mountain biking, Go Ape! and walking trails boasting sixty impressive sculptures to discover across the forest.

New Windermere ‘Bike Boat’ to go daily

A newly launched ‘Bike Boat’ - providing a special ferry service for cyclists across England’s longest lake - will go daily for the school summer holidays. Windermere Lake Cruises has specially adapted a traditional wooden vessel, Sunflower, to carry up to 12 bikes and passengers across the lake and back. Running approximately every 20 minutes, it will act as a ferry service for cyclists travelling between Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre, on the eastern side of the lake and Wray, on Windermere’s tranquil western shore.

New Bus Loop to Wray Castle extends ‘Cross Lakes Experience’

‘Cross Lakes Experience’ gets underway for February half-term

Families can leave the hassle of driving at home this February half term, with the launch of the ‘Cross Lakes Experience’ ticket in the heart of the English Lake District. Windermere Lake Cruises has teamed up with tour specialists Mountain Goat and The National Trust to bring the service to the shores of Windermere and beyond. With daily services from Sat 16 – Sun 24 February, the Cross Lakes Experience links up England’s largest lake with Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s House and Hawkshead, two of the locations most synonymous with one of the Lake District’s best loved inhabitants, children’s author Beatrix Potter.
