Just a short stroll from our Waterhead Pier, you can journey back nearly 2,000 years at Ambleside Roman Fort during this special open day, part of the nationwide Festival of Archaeology.
Enjoy a hands-on day out packed with family-friendly activities, including fascinating artefact displays, guided tours with a National Trust archaeologist, Roman dress-up, dance demonstrations, a working Roman ballista, and live reenactments from the Trimontium Trust.
This exciting event is a partnership between the National Trust and Ambleside’s Armitt Museum, linked to their upcoming 2025 exhibition 'A Battle of Ambleside'.
Also supported by the Trimontium Trust, the Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society (CATMHS) and students from Durham University, it’s a brilliant opportunity to dive into Roman history—right here on the shores of Windermere.
Why not hop off your cruise galley longship and walk march over to explore?
